The Qulit

The tiles form a quilt.

Within the story of a quilt we can discover a deep sense of community and history, plugging us into a frame that holds generations together. Black oral tradition speaks of quilting patterns used to communicate messages through the Underground Railroad, guiding enslaved people on their journey to freedom. While historians argue there is no concrete evidence supporting this practice, the symbolism of these quilts is profound and inspiring. Whether fact or folklore, these patterns function as a kind of magic map towards freedom, dignity, and resistance against the enduring stain of slavery in America. In this way, these quilts become powerful symbols of defiance and liberation.

As we confront the extreme realities of our world today, may we derive strength and innovation from the courage of those who came before us. Let us be guided by the truth that freedom is our birthright and resilience is boundless. The Gift is a tribute to our ancestors, reminding us that their legacy endures in every act of liberation.

The Gift consists of 58 miniature, hand-carved tiles inspired by these quilting patterns. These tiles will be  distributed for free as part of the Toy Dispenser Gallery: Community is Everything at NCECA 2025.

Each tile is peel-and-stick, designed to be placed in your surroundings or kept as a personal memento.
