Light

2021
My work is deeply rooted in depicting the portrayal of Black people throughout history, especially within the ceramic medium, often as racist objects of utility. 'Light' marked my return to ceramics after an 8-year hiatus. In this piece, a figure emerges from a bulbous, patterned form, reminiscent of a mammy cookie jar. The figure gracefully extends away from the patterned dress, shedding her outer painted shell to reveal the natural clay skin underneath. She embodies light, symbolizing transformation. The figure's emergence serves as a powerful metaphor for the resilience and transformation of Black identity, challenging historical stereotypes and reclaiming agency through the medium of ceramics.
